How to use your private medical insurance
Published on 13 June 2017 by Alex Woods, Finance Business Manager, updated on 13 June 2017
Pay for private medical insurance (PMI) or receive it as a benefit from your employer? Don't know how to use it or don't think you use it enough?
One Stop Doctors is accredited with all major insurance companies and with such an extensive range of services, there are lots of benefits to using your PMI with us.
The most common out-patient services covered at One Stop Doctors by the major insurance companies are diagnostic scans such as MRI’s, CT’s or X-ray’s, appointments with consultants and physiotherapy.
We always advise our patients to contact their insurer prior to booking your appointment to confirm you are covered under your policy first!
3 Booking Steps:
You will require a referral letter from a GP to enable you to book a diagnostic scan, consultant appointment or physiotherapy (otherwise your PMI may not cover the cost).*
This can be carried out by one of our private GP’s available 7 days a week with same-day appointments here at One Stop Doctors. With the added benefit of our GP’s being in the same location we can then assist you in promptly booking your appointment, often scans can be done the same day once you have your authorisation/claim number.
*You do not need a referral letter for a consultant appointment or physiotherapy appointment if you decide to pay for treatment yourself without using your insurance.
Once you have your referral letter detailing your required treatment you will be able to contact your insurer to gain your authorisation/claim number. This will act as approval for you to come to One Stop Doctors and enable us to settle the financial element of your treatment with your insurer.
Your appointment can now be booked at a time to suit you. Simply call our dedicated patient services team on and we will make the arrangements for you and liaise with your GP if required.
Did you know?
If your consultant suggests further treatment or tests are required we suggest you go back to your insurer to discuss this and gain approval.
If your policy has some exclusions or you would like to pay for all or part of the treatment yourself please discuss your options with our team. We also offer a pay monthly scheme allowing you to spread your payments over 12 months, interest free with a minimum monthly payment of £100. MORE INFORMATION
If you require onward treatment under an in-patient or daycase setting we can support you in your transfer of care by putting you in touch with nearby private hospitals. We would again advise you to check with your insurer for further approval and the verify your level of cover.
